Three-panel Up the Road a Ways comic set in a modern rural New England restaurant. Josh, seated nearby in a Soundgarden T-shirt, quietly overhears a city visitor questioning his waiter. “How’s the beef?” “Excellent.” “Local?” “Just down the road.” The diner then asks, “Small farm?” The waiter matter-of-factly replies, “If you like I can probably find out the cow’s name for you.” The visitor tries to conceal his mild shock while Josh looks on with quiet amusement.

Three-panel comic titled Up the Road a Ways: To Serve, Man. In a late-summer New England cottage garden, Josh chats with his jovial mail carrier, Chuck, over a picket fence. Josh jokes that Chuck's visits remind him of The Twilight Zone and says he should invite him to play chess. Chuck replies that he can't stay but has just delivered a book, so Josh can be Burgess Meredith instead. Josh holds up the parcel with a knowing grin and replies, "I would, but IT'S A COOKBOOK! So you'll find me in the kitchen."

Three-panel “Up the Road a Ways” comic set in a rural New England general store. A clerk tells Josh, “You got habanero chips.” He cheerfully replies, “Yep!” She looks concerned and explains, “‘Habanero’ means they’re spicy.” Josh answers with patient resignation, “… yes, I know they’re spicy.” Relieved, she says, “Oh good. Just wanted to warn you if you didn’t know.” Josh holds an Up the Road a Ways travel mug, and the bag of Hawaiian Habanero chips remains on the counter throughout.
